Can Kyrie Irving win an NBA Championship and Olympic Gold Medal with Team USA Basketball in the same year?
Kyrie Irving has his eyes on the gold once again as he reunites with his former college coach Mike Krzyzewski to help the Team USA Basketball team win an Olympic Gold Medal in Rio next month.
Krzyzewski coached Irving at Duke for one season before he suffered a severe injury in his right big toe. The two crossed paths again once Irving joined the US Men’s National Team in 2014 for the FIBA Basketball World Cup.
They’re at it again as they attempt to win the Gold.
“He’s one of my mentors, he’s one of the guys I trust and love,” Irving said of his former head coach. “Ever since I left Duke we’ve had a great relationship over the years and I’m looking forward to playing for him again and being his point guard.”
Since Krzyzewski started coaching Team USA, he has an astounding record of 52-1 in international play. This is also the final time that he will lead the team before Gregg Popovich takes over as head coach.
Krzyzewski is relishing the opportunity for a chance to win gold with his former point guard.
“For me and Kyrie it’s been amazing because we didn’t have the chance to win a championship,” Krzyzewski said. “He only played 11 games. We had a chance but he wasn’t 100 percent.”
Even though Irving has won a championship, Krzyzewski doesn’t treat him any different. Earlier this week during a practice, Irving was not taking a play serious while inbounding the ball and Coach K let out an expletive by saying “F**k you.”
You could say that Krzyzewski is making up for lost time between the two.
As mentioned above, international play is not new to Irving. He was named the MVP of the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup for his astounding 26-point performance in the Gold Medal game.
Team USA only has two true point guards on the roster, Irving and Toronto Raptors’ Kyle Lowry. The two went head to head in the Eastern Conference Finals and Irving had the upper hand physically and mentally the entire series.
If you’re trying to figure out who will start at point guard, you can stop right now.
Fresh off capturing an NBA title, the Cleveland Cavaliers’ young point guard is determined to win once more, this time for his country.
Team USA’s next exhibition game is Sunday at 8:00PM ET on NBATV.
